On the 3rd November 2017, René Ruello announced his resignation as President of Stade Rennais, and Olivier Létang became the new President. This new function was endorsed at a meeting of the Board of Directors on the 7th November 2017. Former professional football, having played for Le Mans and then Reims, he also became Managing Director of Reims between 2006 and 2012. Having been Sporting Director at Reims, and then Paris Saint German under Qatari ownership, he took the place of René Ruello, who was experiencing a tough time in his third spell as President which began in May 2014. After a fruitful and constructive meeting with François-Henri Pinault in London a few weeks previously, Létang arrived in the centre of a vast internal restructuring exercise, led by the majority shareholder of the club. Létang’s unswerving ambition shook up the club and took it out of its comfort zone, with immediate and unprecedented results for Stade Rennais. During his time as President he had Sabri Lamouchi and Julien Stéphan as First Team Managers. He saw the club qualify directly for the Europa League group stages two years in a row (2018 and 2019), with a memorable last 16 clash against Arsenal, and his side won the French Cup for the first time in 48 years after a legendary final against the “great Paris Saint Germain” side. Although the team were 3rd in Ligue 1 on the 7th February 2020, Stade Rennais (through their majority shareholder) decided to terminate Létang’s contract as President.
