Yves Colleu ended his playing career in 1989 and returned to his native Brittany to become a coach at Stade Rennais FC. In 1994, he was promoted to Assistant Manager under Michel Le Milinaire, and then stepped out of his shadow in 1996, taking over the role of First Team Manager. For the club’s first-ever season in the Intertoto Cup, the youngest manager in the top flight signed Guivarc’h to complete the attack with Wiltord. In a 4-4-2 formation, he relied on his key players such as André, Carteron, Denis and Lambert; A few recruits came from overseas, such as Papura and Rekdal, and there were some promising youngsters too (Lassissi, Silvestre, Dabo and Bigné.) In spite of achieving some notable victories, Colleu got found out at that level, unable to achieve defensive stability and difficulties in controlling a divided dressing room. At the end of the season, President René Ruello decided that his Manager was still too inexperienced, and Guy David took over from him. In 1998, he became Assistant Manager to Paul Le Guen at Rennes and continued his career by his side
