At the end of the summer transfer window in 2020, Stade Rennais sold their goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for a record sum of 24 Million Euros to Chelsea, and went in search of his replacement. The club chose Alfred Gomis, a fellow Senegalese international. On 28th September, his transfer was a club record (for a goalkeeper) with Gomis signing from Dijon as part of a deal worth 10 million Euros plus 6 Million Euros in Bonuses. Gomis would be the Rennes goalkeeper in their historic first taste of Champions League football. The Senegal shotstopper pulled off some miraculous saves, notably in the away game in Seville. Alas, what followed would be much less convincing, with more goals conceded which were down to him, than positive results obtained from his saves. After 59 matches between the sticks for Rennes, interrupted by a victorious African Cup of Nations campaign with Senegal, he would be relegated down to fourth in the club's goalkeeping hierarchy during the 2022 summer break. He came close to leaving during the pre-season period, and finally took the opportunity in the January transfer window of 2023 to get some game time, after spending six months in the shadows. He joined Italian side Como, in Serie B, on loan - without a buyout option - on 27th January 2023. Invited to train with the Reserves at Rennes upon his return from his spell in Italy, Gomis would find a new destination on loan, this time at FC Lorient, signing for Rennes' Breton neighbours on 1st September 2023. Upon his return from the loan spell in Lorient, he would be released from the last year of his contract, and signed for Palermo in Italy on a two-year deal, including a performance-based bonus provision, and an option for a third year.
