Alou Diarra arrived at Stade Rennais FC on the last day of the winter transfer window in 2013. The former France international midfielder joined Rennes on loan from West Ham. He arrived at a club who had ambitions for the end of the season, lying 4th in the league and with a place in the League Cup Final against Saint-Etienne to look forward to. Diarra was French Champion with Bordeaux in 2009, and was brought in primarily to compensate for the loss of M’Vila to Rubin Kazan. In the four months he spent in Rennes, his performances were completely out of keeping with a player of his status (Finalist in 2006 World Cup and first choice at the 2012 European Championships.) He was moved from defensive midfielder to the bench, via the treatment table, and then to central defence. His stay in Brittany will not live long in the memory, not least because only two of his 12 appearances ended in a Rennes victory.
