Arriving from Burkina Faso, Amadou Coulibaly signed on a two-year deal at Stade Rennais FC at the end of a gruelling trial period in August 2005. The signing of his contract came at the end of an 18-month suspension, punishment for having spat at the referee during an international match for his country. He was still a promising player, and came to help out in a part of the squad where Perrier Doumbé was the only other specialist in the same position. Unfortunately, his progression was stopped by a serious injury when he ruptured his cruciate knee ligaments. He did get back to fitness thereafter, but was only named nine times on the bench, and in the Reserves in CFA (French 4th Division), as Mario Melchiot was untouchable as first-choice. In July 2007, he was released by Stade Rennais, and signed for Grenoble.
