With Stade Rennais struggling defensively at the start of the 1990/1991 season, they called upon Arnold Oosterveer as a wildcard signing on 18th October 1990. Having had a spell at Alkmaar, the Dutch centre-back arrived from French side Niort, where he had been convincing in Division 2. However, even if he was efficient and performed well defensively, Oosterveer had 18 difficult months in terms of the results obtained. Rennes finished last in 1991, but were saved a month later, but were then relegated in 1992 after losing the play-off. After 61 matches with the Red and Blacks, the unlucky Arnold continued his spell in Division 1 with Valenciennes in the Summer of 1992, where he was to be the subject of a new nightmare after the bribery scandal surrounding the match between Valenciennes and Marseille.
