Out of contract after a spell as keeper at Sedan, Benoît Costil signed for Stade Rennais in the close season 2011 on the recommendation of his Manager, and former Rennes player, Landry Chauvin, and with the support of Rennes’ goalkeeping coach Christophe Revel. Freshly crowned Best Goalkeeper of Ligue 2, he arrived with the big task of filling the shoes of the departed Nicolas Douchez. His first season in 2011/2012 was excellent, but he struggled somewhat in 2012/2013, before establishing himself as one of the best keepers in Ligue 1 in the 2013/2014 season. In October 2014, he got his first call-up with France’s senior squad by Didier Deschamps, and sat on the bench for the friendly internationals against Portugal and Armenia, but getting his first cap against the Ivory Coast on 15th November 2016 in Lens. After 255 appearances and 11 penalty saves, Benoît Costil entered the top ten players at Rennes in terms of matches played for the club. On Wednesday 24th May 2017, he left Stade Rennais at the end of his contract for Bordeaux, receiving an ovation at Roazhon Park from the fans on his last appearance v Monaco.
