Bernard Lama arrived at Stade Rennais FC in the summer of 2000. After spending millions on the likes of Lucas, Turdo or Fabiano, the Breton club signed the goalkeeper from French Guyana on a free transfer from Paris Saint Germain. Having been replaced by Letizi in the French capital, Lama took over from Revault, who had struggled to reach his best form after returning from injury at the end of 1999. If the Rennes fans were generally sceptical about the arrival of a 37 year old goalkeeper, and that from a club which was unpopular, “the Cat” didn’t take long to have them eating from his hands, within the space a just a couple of games. Spectacular, freed and decisive, the World Champion spared the Stade Rennais of his traditional clangers, and even finished his international career whilst at Rennes. After a fine season, Lama hung up his gloves at the end of his career, but not without a parting shot in strongly worded declarations aimed at those who were running the club.
