After two loan spells at Marseille and then Bordeaux, Bruno Cheyrou joined Rennes from Liverpool in July 2006. His arrival was supposed to compensate of the loss of Källström to Lyon. With 3 caps in the French national team, and a significant experience in European football, the elder of the two Cheyrou brothers had a difficult start in Rennes. He was left out of the starting line-up by his manager Dréossi for ten games. His return to favour came at the end of 2006 with a goal in the 2-0 derby win over Nantes. After a good season, he missed out on a Champions League place at the death in Lille (1-1). The following season, he became vice-captain behind Didot, until the arrival of Lacombe, who repositioned him in the role of stopper, before leaving him on the bench. In the 2008/2009, he was a victim of the breakthrough of Lemoine, and ended up playing less, in spite of the late equaliser against Marseille in the 4-4 draw. In March 2009, he took advantage of the heavy suspension handed out to Mangane to get back into the starting line-up, and played an active part for the rest of the season, upto the French Cup Final. In January 2010, Cheyrou left for Cyprus as Rennes had a clearout of its playing staff.
