After winning the U19 European Championships in 2010, and with a conclusive loan spell with Genk, which was crowned the the Belgian League title, Chris Mavinga left Liverpool to join Stade Rennais FC in July 2011 in a 1 Million Euro transfer. After the breakdown in negotiations with Morel (Lorient), this left-back (or centre-back) who had been developed at Paris Saint Germain, was chosen by Dréossi to cover for the departure of the disappointing Souprayen to Dijon. After a first season at Rennes, which was well below expectations, his second season was much more convincing, and he became a vital member of the team on the left flank. However, a late-night outing with France’s U21s on 13th October 2012 earned him exclusion from the group. When he returned, he put in some solid displays, helping our Alessandrini. Whilst not really wanting to sell Mavinga, Stade Rennais succumbed to the advances of Rubin Kazan at the end of July 2013, selling him for 4 Million Euros. Mavinga ended up back with his great friend Yann M’Vila at the Russian club after a game of bluff.
