Cyrille L’Helgoualc’h joined Stade Rennais FC in June 1990 having taking his first steps in professional football with Le Mans. This young central defender was supposed to be preserved for the future, but under Kéruzoré, he was quickly given his chance in the 1st Division. The native of Saint Nazaire wasn’t to leave the side of Dutch centre-back partner Oosterveer from the 10th Matchday after the bad injury to stalwart Denis. When Notheaux arrived in 1991/1992, though, L’Helgoualc’h found himself back on the bench, but still found time to score his first goal for the club in an away match at Auxerre (1-3 defeat). Selected to play in all of the defensive positions from the 1992/1993 season, with 30 appearances and 2 goals, L’Helgoualc’h became a key figure in Le Milinaire’s team in the 1993/1994 season when Rennes achieved promotion to Division 1. Once back in the top flight, though, Rennes didn’t rely much on him, with just five appearances to his name, and they also recruited Jensen during the Winter transfer window. In June 1995, L’Helgoualc’h signed for Châteauroux.
