David Merdy joined Stade Rennais FC after earning his stripes at Brest Armorique. This centre-forward joined the First Team when they were promoted to Division 1 in June 1994, but struggled to make his mark in the Rennes attack under boss Le Milinaire. Below the likes of André, Grassi and Wiltord in the pecking order, the native of Brest, made just 2 short appearances in the 1994/1995 season, totalling just 29 minutes of action, but still managed to score his first professional goal against Saint-Etienne in a 2-2 draw. In the following 1995/1996 season, he was named in the squad 15 times, and also scored in the French Cup against Nancy (1-2), before hitting the target again the Intertoto Cup the following season against Lucerne (1-2) before being loaned to Troyes. After 3 disjointed seasons, and as many goals in 338 minutes of game time, Merdy no was no longer part of the manager’s plans on the eve of the 1997/1998 season. Transferred to Wasquehal, he continued his career in amateur football, and also had a brief spell in Scotland with Kilmarnock.
