Stade Rennais were on the lookout for a centre-forward in the Summer of 2017. They threw their hat into the ring with Diafra Sakho at the end of the transfer window. On 30th August 2017, the Senegalese striker passed his medical for the club, but the transfer was aborted owing to the refusal of West Ham to release him. After losing out on Derdiyok, the Red and Blacks renewed their interest in the Senegal international at the beginning of 2018, this time succeeding in securing their target in a deal worth 5 Million Euros, for a 50% stake in the player on 28th January 2019. After just three goals, and a substitution met by whistles of disapproval from the crowd, Sakho was loaned without a buyout clause to Bursaspor in Turkey on 31st August 2018. When he returned from his loan-spell in July 2019, he made just one appearance on a team-sheet, before having his contract cancelled on 31st December 2019.
