In the Summer of 2019, Rennes were searching for an outlet for goalkeeper Tomas Koubek to leave, and wanted to enlist a goalkeeper who was superior all-round. This was achieved on 6th August 2019 when Edouard Mendy signed from Reims for 4 Million Euros, whilst Koubek left to join Augsburg in Germany. The Senegal international keeper enjoyed his first taste of the Europa League with Stade Rennais, having played three seasons as a professional in Reims. Having saved a penalty from Jonas Martin on his debut for Rennes at Strasbourg, he became a calming figure and boss of the Rennes 18-yard box. The only black mark on an otherwise excellent season was a 3rd minute red card against Cluj in the Europa League. Due to don the gloves for Rennes in the Champions League, he was courted by Chelsea at the end of August 2020. On 23rd September 2020, he joined The Blues in a deal worth 24 Million Euros with a 6 Million Euro Bonus, thus becoming not only the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of Rennes, but also in the whole of Ligue 1. Mendy quickly established himself at his new club in his first season in London, and after having denied his former Rennes team-mates in the group stage, he finished his season with a victory in Porto, where Chelsea won the Champions League Final against Manchester City (1-0)
