In the transfer window of the Summer of 2014, Stade Rennais made the recruitment of a centre-back their top priority. Their choice was made with a player from Nacional Madeira. Edson Mexer, a Mozambique international, is one of the completely unknown players that Jean-Luc Buisine loved to uncover. After 4 seasons in Portugal, Mexer came to Rennes in a deal worth 2.3 Million Euros to try and realise his potential in Ligue 1, just a few months after a previous attempt to sign him for Rennes had fallen through. 50-odd matches later, he extended his contract to 2019 on 25th February 2016. After two rather chaotic seasons, he became imperial in Julian Stéphan’s team in the 2018/2019 campaign, as much in European competition, as in the French Cup Final, where he scored the equaliser against Paris Saint Germain. On 7th May 2019, he left on a free transfer at the end of his Rennes contract to sign for 4 seasons in Bordeaux.
