After a trial which was judged as conclusive by the coaching staff at Stade Rennais in the Autumn of 2012, Ejike Uzoenyi signed a six-month loan deal in January 2013 to join the Red and Blacks. After his triumphant participation with Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations in South Africa, he re-joined the Rennes squad where his profile, as a left-footer, made him the understudy of Alessandrini. Having only arrived at the La Piverdière training ground in March, the Nigerian got sent off playing for the Reserves, which delayed his integration into the senior squad still further. He finally got on at the end of a match in Valenciennes, but those three minutes would be his only appearance in Red and Black, Rennes didn’t take up the buyout clause in his loan deal.
