After a successful trial, Elderson Echiejile signed for Stade Rennais in June 2007. This promising left-back came to be groomed as a future replacement for Edman and Jeunechamp in that position. After several matches in CFA (French 4th Division), and a swift acclimatisation to French football, Echiejile made his first appearance on the team-sheet in December. With the arrival of Manager Lacombe, Echiejile made his first start and was a success in a 0-0 draw at Toulouse at the end of the season. But it was in a 1-1 draw in Lyon in April 2008, when he finally demonstrated that he had the potential to become first-choice. Although he was mostly an understudy to Traoré, in 2008 and then to Bocanegra up until 2010, Echiejile became a Nigerian international thanks to his performances in Brittany. Antonetti didn’t appreciate Echiejile a great deal, mainly because of his poor life hygiene choices, and he only made one appearance in the 2009/2010 season, but still managed to represent his country at the World Cup in South Africa. At the end of his contract in Rennes, he signed for Sporting Braga in Portugal, with whom his reached the Final of the Europa League in 2011.
