Éric Durand arrived at Stade Rennais FC from Bastia in June 2001. Manager Gourcuff signed Durand, as he felt that Debec wasn’t capable of holding down the role of first choice goalkeeper, as he had some experience under his belt in that position. After honourable displays in the two legs against Aston Villa, Durant went up in the esteem of his boss, and took advantage of the opening day humiliation at home to Auxerre to make the number 1 jersey his for the second match of the season. All through the season, he put in a series of serious displays, without being decisive in the positive or negative sense of the word. At the beginning of the following season 2002/2003, he returned to the subs’ bench following the arrival of Cech, and only made three appearances in total during the whole year (one in the league, one in the French Cup, and the third was in the League Cup.) In June 2003, he decided to hang up his boots aged 38 and returned to Bastia to join the coaching staff at the Corsican club.
