After passing through the Academy systems at Lyon, Toulouse and Monaco, Fabien Boyer was spotted by Stade Rennais’ scouts when he was at Jura Sud. Recruited on a one year contract, with a optional extension in the Summer of 2011 as an apprentice, this left-footed centre back played in some pre-season friendlies with the professional squad before ending up in the Reserves, where he had a decent season. However, despite being named in the squad for the home game against Montpellier a the end of the season, Boyer was not offered a professional contract in Brittany, and signed for Angers who were playing in Ligue 2 at the time.
