Fabien Debec signed for Rennes in June 1996 from Lyon to take the place of the combined departures of Le Garrec and Roy. He got an early test in July in the Intertoto Cup under the management of Colleu in an away game against the Croat side HNK Segesta. But with Heurtebis and Pandurovic in the squad preferred over him, he was not to appear on the team-sheet again after his solitary appearance of that season. Nevertheless, he was perfectly integrated within the squad, as was illustrated by his appearance with Wiltord and André on the irreverent Philippe Guillard show on Canal+. In the 1997/1998 season, he only managed 19 minutes in the nightmare home defeat (1-2) against Guingamp, which most people felt would condemn them to relegation. After getting some game-time whilst playing understudy to Revault, Malicki and Lama, he was finally announced as Number 1 for the 2001/2002 season. But he was to pay heavily for an opening day debacle at home to Auxerre (0-5) and was progressively dropped by Manager Gourcuff, with Durand taking his place. In July 2002, he tried his luck in England, at Coventry City.
