After a season at Clairefontaine, Fabrice Fernandes arrived at Stade Rennais FC in 1997, hoping to confirm the hopes people had of him. In the summer of 1998, this attacking midfielder became an instant hit under Manager Le Guen, and started the season on the left-hand side of Rennes’ midfield. He scored in his second game at Montpellier (1-3), and the fans had lots of hope in him, but his manager lost confidence in him due to his physical fragility, and his behaviour, which sometimes left a lot to be desired. After the 15th Matchday, he would never again be named in the starting line-up, and spent a year in the wilderness. In the 1999/2000 season, he would regularly replace Gava, but never managed to hit the heights of his early career in Rennes. In the 2001/2002 season, Fernandes didn’t convince Gourcuff either upon his return from loan at Fulham and at Rangers. After a short spell in Marseille, he made a permanent move to Southampton at the beginning of 2002, where he spent the best years of his career.
