Hailing from rival city Nantes, and son of the former professional footballer, Jacky Simon, Fabrice Simon would spend several years playing for Equeurville in Normandy. He joined Rennes, aged 17, in 1981. Alas, he would see little of the world of professional football with the Red and Blacks, as he only made two appearances in the Second Division for the club during the 1981/1982 season, mostly having to make do with playing in the Reserves. In 1983, he moved on to Saint Seurin, where he played for two season before becoming a player-manager for Surtainville in Division d'Honneur between 1985 and 1987.
