Stade Rennais’ African scouting network was not exactly blessed with success in the 2007/2008 season. Aside from the brief hopes placed in Moukandjo and N’Guessi, Rennes had also taken a chance on Félix Katongo in January 2008. After journeyman spells in the Zambian, South African and Angolan championships, this attacking midfielder got his first contract in Europe. A key player of the Zambian national side, much like his brother Chris, he only made two appearances on the team-sheet under Lacombe. He was kept in the summer for his unorthodox, agile dribbling style, he got his chance in a League Cup match against Le Mans (2-2, won on penalties) alongside other novices such as Théophile-Catherine and Oniangué Despite putting in a solid performance, he failed to convince his boss. He was loaned out as a wildcard to Châteauroux 15 days later. He had a catastrophic end to the season, and was kicked out of the professional squad there. Katongo was transferred to South Africa in June 2009.
