Georges Mandjeck arrived at Stade Rennais just a few days after his return from the World Cup in South Africa where he had participated with Cameroon. Voted best player with German Second Division side Kaiserslautern, this robust defensive midfielder came to fill in a void left by the departure of M’Bia, and the repeated injuries of Tettey. Bought from 1.2 Million Euros from Stuttgart, Mandjeck has a disjointed first season, with some decisive performances, but also others which were equally decisive, but for all the wrong reasons. His path the starting line-up in midfield was barred by the irreplaceable M’Vila, but he was able to take advantage of the absences of Mangane, Apam and Boye to take a spot in central defence. After an excellent start in this new position, he was on the receiving end of the ire of his boss Antonetti after a derby match against Brest. Written off in Brittany, he scored his one and only goal for Rennes in Madrid against Atletico in the Europa League before joining Auxerrre at the end of January 2012.
