Born in the Morbihan region in the South of Brittany, Gérard Le Bastard began his footballing career with US Montagnarde, before joining Lorient for a few seasons, and finally tasting professional football with Stade Rennais in the 1961/1962. During that season, he would - however - only make five appearances, of which four of them came in the league. Selected up front for Rennes, alongside Goujon, Mahi and Bourras, he would score on his professional debut on matchday 24, netting the only goal in the 75th minute against Strasbourg in a 1-0 win. He would be given very little gametime by Antoine Cuissard, and would only stay with Rennes for a single season. He moved on to Stade Lavallois, where he would spend the remaining years of his playing career before retiring.
