Born in Chateaugiron in the Ille-et-Vilaine region, Gérard Primault joined Stade Rennais at the tender age of 17. This defensive midfielder would only make on appearance for the professional side at Rennes in his only season at the club. He managed just a few minutes of gametime in a Second Division fixture on Matchday 33, a 6-2 Rennes victory at Caen on 16th May 1981, when he replaced Zajaczkowski as a substitute. He would, however, make numerous appearances for the Reserves, who won the French 4th Division title (CFA).
