Born in the Breton region of Finisterre, Gilbert Le Goff began his footballing career at the age of 19 with En Avant Guingamp in the French 2nd Division. He would spend seven seasons with the club from the Côtes d'Armor. He made a total of 249 appearances for the club, scoring 23 goals in that time. In 1984, he was recruited by Stade Rennais, who were looking to bounce back after relegation from the First Division the previous season. In his first season at the club, he quickly made his mark, becoming a regular in the starting XI in Rennes' defence, operating at right-back. At the end of the 1984/1985 season, Rennes succeeded in gaining promotion to the First Division after an epic play-off campaign. For the next two years in the top flight, he would often alternate as a full-back with Dominique Marais. In 1987, Rennes were - sadly - relegated back to the Second Division, but Le Goff chose to remain loyal to the club. That season, though, he would see his gametime shrink as a result of the arrival of Alain Doaré. No longer a first-team regular at Rennes, he left the club at the end of the 1987/1988 season, having played 135 matches, scoring five goals over his four seasons with Stade Rennais. He would end his career back in amateur football, where he was notably player-coach with Carhaix, upto 1998.
