Born in the Charentes region on the West coast of France, Gilles Mourgaud started his career with Limoges in 1970. Left-sided defender by trade, he would spend three years playing for the club in the Second Division, the last of which saw him gain significantly more game-time than the first two. In 1973, he signed for Stade Rennais, but wouldn't make any appearances with the professionals in the First Team until the 1975/1976 season. He would begin that season as first choice, starting in the first fifteen games of the season, before disappearing completely from the teamsheet until the end of the season. After Périault was repositioned to the left side of the Rennes defence, Mourgaud would not play another game in Red and Black, and left the club at the end of the season. Subsequently, he joined Poitier, where he would play out the remainder of this career.
