On the lookout for a new centre-forward after the difficult season for the trio Toivonen, Habibou and Hosiner, Stade Rennais signed Giovanni Sio for 3 seasons on 29th June 2015. Developed at FC Nantes, the Ivory Coast international had just returned to FC Basle from a convincing loan period at Bastia, when he joined Rennes. Capable of playing on the right-hand side of attack, his favourite position was most certainly playing as centre-forward. In spite of strong competition from Lille, Rennes sealed the deal for an estimated fee of 2 Million Euros. For two season, Giovanni Sio was given the thankless task of being a solo striker. Scoring 16 goals in a Rennes shirt, he left behind him a bitter-sweet impression to the supporters, between his generosity on the pitch, and a certain clumsiness in front of goal. He signed for Montpellier on 17th July 2017.
