Having been scouted by Stade Rennais FC aged 11, Grégory Douard followed the classic route to the top flight. He was in the same generation of goalkeepers as Romain Salin, Florent Chaigneau and Simon Pouplin. He took part in the Gambardella Cup (French FA Youth Cup) upto the victory in the Final in 2003. Taking advantage of the departure of Salin, and the fall from grace of Chaigneau, he became third-choice keeper at the club, with Andreas Isaksson as number one. In the 2004/2005 season, he appeared once on the team-sheet, and then six times in 2005/2006. Unfortunately for him, the club built all their plans around Pouplin, and Grégory Douard was not offered a professional contract. He signed for Concarneau in 2006, playing in CFA (French 4th Division), and played in their historic run in the French Cup, before exiting with a heavy 0-6 defeat by a great Lyon side.
