As a bit-part player in the Rennes side that won the Gambardella Cup (French FA Youth Cup) in 2003, Grégory Tanagro appeared in the Stade Rennais First-Team in the 2003/2004 season. In the absence of Diatta, Grenet and Jeunechamp, and after Vignal’s departure, this right-back was given his first start in the cauldron of a derby match at Guingamp (2-0 win) in January 2004, and put in a faultless display for 90 minutes. This match followed two appearances as substitute against Lyon and Sochaux. Unfortunately for Tanagro, he suffered ruptured cruciate knee ligaments in the February of the same year, which stopped his development in its tracks. But the club kept their faith in him regardless, offering him his first professional contract just a few days after his injury. In the 2004/2005 season, however, he didn’t get any favours from Manager Bölöni, who preferred to rely on the likes of Jeunechamp, Perrier, Edman or Le Lan. Loaned out to his hometown Sète for 6 months in 2006, he was released by Rennes on his return from his loan spell, and then signed for Agde.
