Dutch international Hans Hateboer was born in Beerta in the Netherlands in 1994. He started playing football as a youth with THOS and Veendam, before joining the Academy setup at Groningen, where he began his career as a professional footballer in 2013. Hateboer made 111 appearances in all competitions, scoring 5 goals during his time at the club, and also won the Dutch Cup in the 2014/2015 season, before being signed by Atalanta Bergamo in the January transfer window in 2017. He was still credited with the greatest number of assists by a defender in the Eredivisie in his final season playing in the Netherlands.
He joined Atalanta at a time when they were already booming. Under boss Andrea Conti, he had to bide his time on the bench before finally breaking through as a wing back in a 3-4-3 formation. His debut was a success, providing an assist in a 3-0 win over Pescara. When Conti left for Milan, Hateboer came into his own during the 2017/2018 season, playing in every one of the league fixtures that campaign, even chipping in with five goals as Atalanta qualified for the Champions League for the first time.
He earned his first international call up in 2018 when Ronald Koeman gave him his debut against England in a friendly in Amsterdam.
Whilst Hateboer's Champions League began with a 0-4 defeat at Dinamo Zagreb, he would score his first goals in the showpiece European competition in a 4-1 win over Valencia in the Round of 16 in the 2019/2020 season.
He suffered a setback in August 2021, when a foot injury in training sidelined him for several months, having to wait until 30th November to make his comeback in a home win against Venezia.
Three years on from that injury, on 5th August, and having made 245 appearances in an Atalanta shirt, scoring 12 goals in total, Hateboer signed a 2 year contract (and an option for a further year) with Stade Rennais, who were in the market for reinforcements in the defensive sector, in a deal worth 2 Million Euros.
