Born in Le Mans in the Sarthe region of France, Hervé Goby made his first steps in football with the Cercle Paul Bert in Rennes as a youngster. In 1977, he joined Stade Rennais, aged 17. On 1st October 1977, he became the youngest player to start a match for Rennes in a professional match in a 5-1 victory over Guingamp. His record would last ten years, when Guimard took over that crown, and other players subsequently claimed the record. (Goby is now 6th in the list of youngest players to start a match for Rennes - correct as of 2021.) Defender by trade, he would however make the rare appearance, with only 8 matches in the 1977/1978 season and 5 in the season that followed. Between 1979-1981, he had to settle for matches with the Amateur team of Stade Rennais, before eventually returning to play for his local childhood side, Cercle Paul Bert in Rennes.
