Ivica Mornar was loaned to Stade Rennais FC from Portsmouth in 2004. The Croatian international striker was to be Monterrubio’s counterpart on the right side of Rennes’ attack. In a position where neither Vairelles nor N’Guéma had excelled in the 2003/2004 season, the striker didn’t have any problems starting the season as first-choice. Having made a good start, marked by several assists, including one for Frei against Nantes in a 1-0 win in his best match in a Rennes shirt, he began to disappoint as the weeks went by. Regularly on the treatment table from November onward, his relationship with Manager Bölöni became increasingly tense, and the lucky-charm Maoulida was given the nod ahead of him in the starting line-up. After an umpteenth appearance as substitute in a 0-1 defeat at Strasbourg in December 2004, he would no longer appear in a Rennes shirt. Dréossi declined the option to purchase the Croat. Back at Portsmouth, Mornar ended his career at the end of the 2005/2006 season.
