On the 4th June 2018, Stade Rennais officially announced the arrival of Jakob Johansson who was out of contract after a spell with AEK Athens. The Swedish international defensive midfielder came to the club having crowned the qualification of his national team for the World Cup in Russia by scoring the winning goal in the Play-Offs against Italy. He was, however, unable to take part in the World Cup due to a knee injury, and he arrived to taste European football in the Europa League, as he had done in Greece. After recovering from his injury, he made a quiet, but solid start in his first few appearances in October 2018, and then got injured again in January 2019, having to experience the Europa League and French Cup runs from the stands. Having made 22 appearances, with one goal against Nantes, in his first season, Johansson missed all of the curtailed 2019/2020 season through injury, and had his contract cancelled by mutual consent to enable him to sign on a free transfer for his first professional Club, IFK Göteborg.
