Saint-Malo born goalkeeper Jean-Claude Boulain began his footballing at Stade Dinannais before being picked up by Stade Rennais in 1963. Third-choice behind D'Arménia and Robin in the goalkeeping pecking order, he would barely manage to get gametime with the Professional side. He would end up making just two appearances as a starter between the sticks. The first came in the League Cup against Angers (0-1) at the start of the 1963/1964 season and then against Cherbourg.
After that, he would be left to the Amateur team, and didn't see a route back to the First Team until February 1964. Then he would play a Drago Cup match against Le Havre (2-6) then two league matches against Lyon (1-4) and Angers (2-4). With just 5 starts to his name, and 19 goals conceded he would be released at the end of the 1963/1964 season, leaving to sign for Auxerre's amateurs. He passed away in the Yonne region of France on 6th August 1995, aged just 52 years old.
