Jean Gonzales was born in Algeria, and moved to France during the 1930s having spent some time playing in Morocco. This sturdy goalkeeper played for several seasons at Red Star and then CA Paris, before signing for Stade Rennais in January 1945. At that time, Rennes already had four goalkeepers on their books, but none of them performed as well as hoped. Gonzales was thus able to come in a claim a comfortable place in the starting line-up for Rennes, a spot he occupied for a season-and-a-half, making 49 appearances for Stade Rennais University Club, conceding 88 goals in that time. At a time where strikers regularly got the upper hand, he would manage just 13 clean sheets during his spell at the club. He left Brittany at the end of the 1945/1946 season to sign for Le Havre in Normandy.
