Jean Goyer was a striker born in the Calvados region of Normandy, and he began his footballing journey with a local club, Rouen. He was recruited by Stade Rennais in 1978, but he would stay there for just one season, during which time he didn't see much action in the professional side, making just three appearances, of which two were in the starting line-up. In his first game, he came on after 62 minutes in place of Alain Borne, in a 2-1 victory at Quimper on 13th January 1979 on matchday 19 in the French Second Division. He started the next two games, scoring the equaliser against Angoulême in a 1-1 draw, his only goal in a Rennes shirt. At the end of the 1978/1979 season, he returned to Normandy to his hometown, Lisieux, where he ended his playing days.
