Looking for a successor to M’Vila in the Summer of 2012, Stade Rennais FC opted for Jean II Makoun. The Cameroon international arrived on loan with a buyout clause from Aston Villa. After his beginnings with Lille in 2003, this slender defensive midfielder had joined Lyon in 2008, then Aston Villa, and then Olympiakos. After a difficult start to the season, he helped re-establish some balance in the Rennes side from his very first appearance, and then became a key player in the team, not least when Yann M’Vila left in January 2013. After a solid 2013/2014 season under Philippe Montanier, he only made one appearance in the whole of the 2014/2015 season, and was left out for the rest of it by his boss. At the end of his contract in June 2015, he bounced back at Antalyaspor in Turkey on 21st August, where he was reunited with his illustrious compatriot Sameul Eto’o.
