A year after the disappointment of Vignal, and as a consequence of the combined departures of both Diatta and Grenet, Stade Rennais FC hired the services of a new full-back in 2004. The chosen one was Jean-Joël Perrier Doumbé, and he was signed from Auxerre, where he had been developed as a youngster. Capable of playing on the left- or right-hand side of the back four, the French-Cameroon defender had to put up with the competition of Jeunechamp, who – in turn - was in competition with Le Lan. At the heart of this trio of full-backs, Perrier made the right-back slot his under Manager Bölöni, et had an interesting start to the season. Whilst also being first-choice in the same position for Cameroon, he was reliable as a defender, but only sporadicallty contributed when going forward. In the 2005/2006 season, he took advantage of the serious injury to Jeunechamp to keep his place in the starting line-up, in spite of the arrival of Edman. With Dréossi taking command in the 2006/2007 season, Perrier couldn’t compete with his rival Melchiot, and signed for Celtic in January 2007 to get more game-time.
