Shortly after his arrival in June 1998, the new Rennes Manager Le Guen prioritised the recruitment of defenders. Jean-Luc Dogon had the right profile, exemplary professional, a leader on the pitch, and experienced too, thanks to his past experiences in Europe with Bordeaux and Strasbourg primarily. The stopper was developed at Laval and was first-choice in the first part of the season, where he notably scored the equaliser at Marseille thanks to his excellent header. After the winter break, Arribagé returned from his suspension for having tested positive for Nandrolone, and as time went by, Dogon found himself progressively relegated to the bench. Between injuries and tactical choices, he didn’t start a game between February and the end of the season. He did get back into the starting line-up at the start of the following 1999/2000 season, but then was again pushed out by the competition from Arribagé, Diatta and Sommeil. He left the club, and the top flight with a whimper in June 2000 to join Créteil.
