Jean-Luc Vasseur signed for Stade Rennais FC in June 1992 from the club who developed him, Paris Saint Germain. This full-back came to replace the irreplaceable Le Dizet, who had moved to neighbours FC Nantes-Atlantique. Under the stewardship of Notheaux, he was undisputed first-choice, playing 41 matches in a defence which also featured Denis, Sorin and Rico. He went on to confirm his status under Le Milinaire, playing 39 matches and scoring twice, helping his side to gain promotion back to the top flight. In the 1994/1995 season, he suffered from the competition, as two new full-backs - Fugier and Carteron - arrived at the club. The new pairing was pretty much untouchable, and despite his versatility on the right-hand side of midfield, Vasseur only managed 9 starts and 19 appearances in total that season. At the end of the season, he signed for Saint-Etienne, thereby leaving the space for young defenders Régis Le Bris and Silvestre to join the senior squad.
