Jean-Michel Garnier was born in Piré-sur-Seiche, near Rennes, and signed for Stade Rennais in 1977, aged 16. This solid attacker was developed over several years, but never made the step-up to the professional set-up. He made just the one solitary cameo appearance as a substitute in the Second Division during the 1980/1981 season, coming on for Zivaljevic in a match against Paris FC (2-1) which would be his only minutes as a professional footballer. In 1982, having spent five seasons with the club, he moved on to play for Amicale Lucé.
