Born in Morlaix in the Finistère region of Brittany, Jean Paugam spent many years as a player with Stade Léonard at Saint-Pol-de-Léon. He was signed by Stade Rennais in 1960 for what would turn out to be his one-and-only season as a professional footballer. He was given his first start in the First Division on matchday 11 of the 1960/1961 season against Saint Etienne, and went on to make 13 appearances in the league and also played once in the French Cup. He was mainly used as a left-back, but also made the odd appearance in midfield, and even played in attack on one occasion. Not getting the game-time he had hoped for, he returned to Saint-Pol-de-Léon the following season, playing for ES Kreisker, which would prove to be his last club as a footballer. He passed away on 7th April 2012, aged 81.
