Jean Pignault was a Rouen-born midfielder, and he began his career naturally with the Red Devils in his hometown club. He turned professional in 1941, during the Second World War, and he would notably will the Northern Zone championship in 1945. That same season Rouen would go on to defeat the Southern Zone champion, Lyon OU, 4-0, but their national title, acquired on the pitch, would not be recognised after all, owing to numerous protests which had been registered regarding certain results that season. For the 1945/1946 season, he would sign for Stade Rennais, where he would be first-choice in the opening seven fixtures of the First Division campaign (2 matches in attack, and 5 matches in central defence), but would then be used only sparingly, making a total of only ten apperances in his lone season with Rennes. After that, he dropped into amateur football, and finished his playing career with Vernon.
