Johann Ramaré made a couple of substitute appearances in 2003 when Stade Rennais FC won the Gambardella Cup (French FA Youth). Although absent for the Final, this versatile midfielder continued to play for the Reserve team for three seasons. In 2006, Boulogne – an ambitious club playing in National (French 3rd Division), who were looking to get promotion to Ligue 2 – signed him to provide inspiration to their midfield, the only opportunity he had to make the step-up to professional football. A season later, and Boulogne were promoted to Ligue 2, and had managed to stay up. In 2008/2009, the former Rennes player played a key part in their promotion to Ligue 1. As luck would have it, on the opening day of the new season on 8th August 2009, Rennes hosted Ramaré’s Boulogne (3-0 win for Rennes), in a game which was of special significance for the player, who was born in Rennes.
