After a convincing trial in the Spring of 2008, John Boye was loaned to Stade Rennais that Summer. Whilst only ever appearing as a substitute, the Ghanaian centre back surprised everyone by still deciding to extend his contract by two seasons when Antonetti arrived at the club in 2009. Boye took advantage of the repeated injury problems of Mangane, Kana-Biyik and Apam to appear in the senior squad. His debut in the starting line-up against Nice in a 2-0 victory was surprisingly good, and a week later his put in a outstanding display at Toulouse in a 2-1 win, and had his contract extended for three seasons. Often criticised for his lack of technical prowess, he was certainly known for this combative attitude and defensive strength. In 2013/2014, he no longer figured in the plans of Montanier, but still finished the season as a regular in the team as he rotated personnel. In June 2014, on the eve of the World Cup, he was out of contract, and signed for Turkish side Kayseri Erciyesspor, where he linked up with two former Rennes players, Mangane and Mandjeck.
