John Verhoek arrived as a complete unknown at Stade Rennais at the end of January 2011. Transferred from Den Bosch in Holland for 510,000 Euros, the Dutch centre-forward arrived to complete the squad which had been decimated by the repeated injuries to Montaño and Kembo-Ekoko, but especially by the departures of Bangoura and Gyan at the end of August 2010. Despite Dréossi’s statement that Verhoek was “a player for the future, who will need to be given some time…” the Dutchman was thrown into action too soon in France. His tactical and technical deficiencies soon erased any of the hopes placed in him. After just two starts, Verhoek hadn’t managed to score a goal, and was loaned out to ADO Den Haag for the 2011/2012 season. In spite of 5 goals scored in the Dutch Eredivisie, he was sent back out on loan to FSV Frankfurt for the 2012/2013 season, where he scored 10 goals. In June 2013, he joined St Pauli, who were challenging for promotion to the 1.Bundesliga.
