Confronted with the departure of Club Captain Benjamin André, and with a new Europa League campaign to prepare for, Stade Rennais bolstered its midfield on 2nd September 2019 with the signing of Jonas Martin, who himself was captain at Strasbourg. It was Manager Julien Stéphan’s choice to sign the player, who was developed at Montpellier, and who joined Rennes on a three-year contract in deal worth 3.5 Million Euros. After two seasons, passing virtually unnoticed due to repeated injury problems, it was in the final year of his contract that he finally launched his spell with Rennes in earnest. He came back from nowhere when Rennes hosted Clermont in September 2021, where he would score his lone goal in Red and Black, and became a key member of the record-breaking 2021/2022 Stade Rennais squad. He made his 54th and final appearance for Stade Rennais as a substitute in the 2-2 draw at Lille on 21st May 2022, and left the club at the end of season with a 4th-placed finish in Ligue 1 and qualification for the Group Stages of the Europa League.
