Boosted by becoming U20 World Champion in 2003, José Adailton arrived in Brittany the following year to bolster a defence shorn of the emblematic Arribagé. His play and awareness were understated, but he was dominant in the air, and quickly became first choice. Whilst never reaching the heights, his performances were solid, and he retained the confidence of Bölöni for a season and a half, with the qualification for the UEFA Cup as a reward in 2005. During the winter of 2006, Rennes signed up a certain John Mensah. This arrival, allied with the blossoming form of Faty, and especially that of Bourillon, meant that the Brazilian ended up sidelined. Thing went from bad to worse, when he suffered a severe knee injury in April 2006. When he finally returned from injury, new boss Dréossi deemed him as surplus to requiements, preferring the defensive pairing of Mensah and Bourillon. Adailton returned to Brazil and the mythical Santos FC. He returned to Europe to try his luck once more in 2010, joining Sion in Switzerland.
